Essence Magazine May 2013: Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae looks radiant on the cover of Essence magazine may 2013 issue rocking her trademark hair and style.

In the issue, Janelle explains how she remains unique as an artist and a woman, steering clear of using sex to dominate the charts:

“I like skirts and dresses just like everyone else, but I had a message I needed to put out there. It was up to me to show people and young girls there was another way.”

She also adds that the double standard is apparent in music, but she refuses to be objectified: “People don’t ask Jay-Z to take off his shirt when he rhymes.”

Get it, girl. Check out Janelle’s cover story when the issue hits newsstands on April 15. You can also peep her on the cover of Flatt Magazine‘s “Women in Music” issue now.
