Dawn Okoro is a Nigerian American artist whose paintings features bold, color saturated, sensual portraits of beautiful black women. The theme of her work embodies one’s search for identity through brands and trends with images depicting young women wearing popular clothing styles, posing or taking ‘selfies’ as she paints a portrait of the security and insecurity one feels while concealed in the identity of a brand.
Her artwork illustrates space, movement, pattern, design, texture, and color; as well as lived experiences and self-reflexivity. Self-reflexivity is a process by which she critically examines the experiences (exterior and interior) that shape her everyday life and those that surround her. With a mix of contemporary art and retro flare inspired by fashion in popular culture, Dawn Okoro incorporates photography, collage, ideas and art.
