Lately, there has been gist flying around about Deola Sagoe showing at New York Fashion Week. You see, a Nigerian designer showcasing anywhere on international grounds is a big deal. So of course, we followed up on it.
7 months after re-branding to Deola, she sets foot in New York along with the sister label, CLAN, to present her spring 2015 collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
The collection is unlike anything she’s ever made, Well, if you’re re-branding, there has to be some sort of difference to your style, yes? , it’s a chugalug of fresh fun dresses, play suits, pants and then red carpet pieces all stitched with interesting details that subtly exudes an air of youthful vibrance but with the presence of classic modernity. It’s something you’ll love and your mother will love too.
Drawing inspiration from her daughter’s class project which was part artistic, part scientific – based on moths, flies and butterflies, Deola explores the intricacy of these visually stunning and magical creatures.
Developing my own fabric is essential for me. Everytime I do it, it’s fresh; the drawing and the process of making Adire, starting with indigo and then just making music with colour and patterns, “fabric jazz”.
I wanted to play with floaty fabrics this time. It was just my mood. Of course I’m still in the throes of my love affair with Aso Oke, which is still a huge feature in this collection.
There’s a WHOLE lot to say about Deola’s collection, because it’s amazing in every sense of the word. Now, it’s your turn!
